Pros
It’s really hard to go wrong with 1/4″ of 1095 carbon steel on a full tang knife. The sheer size of the knife sends it closer to the pry bar realm than a knife, so this S.O.B. is going to take the sort of abuse reserved for airstrikes on Baghdad. The price is ridiculously low for such a slab o’ steel.
Cons
It’s made in Taiwan. Ugh. And, I’m personally not big on these types of cheesy nylon Rambo sheaths, but that’s easily remedied in the kydex aftermarket or a piece of buckskin an your imagination.

The Schrade SCHF9 Extreme Survival Knife is one of the larger models on the market, coming in at just over 12 inches in length. The blade itself is 6.4 inches long, and the handle makes up the remaining 5.7 inches. It weighs in at a hefty 15.9 ounces, and is solidly constructed.
The blade is made from 1095 high carbon steel, which is one of the strongest spring steel blends on the market. This is not a stainless steel blade, which means that it is capable of taking a better edge and holding it longer than stainless steel can provide. That’s a good tradeoff for a little more in the way of maintenance to prevent corrosion and rust. The blade does feature an anti-corrosion coating as well.
The SCHF9 Extreme Survival Knife also features a full tang running the length of the handle, which is a nice departure from the rat-tail tangs seen on so many inferior knives. A full tang provides a host of advantages, including a stronger knife overall, a longer lasting tool, less handle vibration and no movement of the handle along the tang (the handle is affixed directly to the tang, which is impossible with a rat-tail tang).
The knife features a drop point, re-curved blade. That means the point has plenty of strength as well as precision. The re-curve offers lots of belly for cutting, and the inward curve makes many tasks easier. There is a built-in finger slot behind the blade but before the handle for better grip, as well. The handle itself is ergonomically molded for your hands, and features a black ring pattern on the TPE handle slabs. At the rear of the handle, you’ll find a lanyard hole, allowing the insertion of a cord to secure it to your wrist.
The Schrade SCHF9 Extreme Survival Knife also comes with a ballistic grade nylon sheath that features its own lanyard and a storage pouch (good for keeping a whetstone handy). The lanyard can be tied around the thigh while the sheath is secured to your belt. The storage pouch features a clip to keep it closed, and a Velcro strap grips the knife’s handle to secure it in the sheath.

The Schrade SCHF9 Extreme Survival Knife plays a role in many different areas. It’s a large knife, so there’s plenty of leverage in heavy-duty cutting situations. Thanks to the re-curved blade design, it’s equally at home carving wood or skinning a kill. It serves in fishing, hunting, camping or makes a good addition to a tradesman’s tool kit. In addition, while the knife is not made of stainless steel, the protective coating on the blade helps ensure that it can serve for years in almost any environment without much in the way of maintenance. The higher grade carbon steel used in the blade also allows this knife to hold a sharper edge for longer than most stainless steel alloys. It’s also lower in price, which is a nice benefit.

Getting 1/4″ thick, 1095 steel blade at this price is absolutely SICK! If you’re looking for a Tough, Beefy, Heavy Workhorse of a knife… Look no further.
This is NOT a collector’s display knife; it’s a working tool. In no way does it compare to the fit, finish and aesthetic appeal of handmade or collector’s knives (like my Randall-Made Model 7–a high-end handmade working knife). It’s an inexpensive knife that happens to be made of good quality materials (like 1095 high-carbon steel) by a mass-production process to an affordable price point.
Really solid, heavy knife, comfortable grip even for my small, female hands. The sheath has plenty of velcro strapping to adjust sizing of the sheath and even though not shown in the pics, it does have a leg-tie.
