Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate
There are essentially three versions of the Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate: the Ultimate (has serrations), the Ultimate Fine Edge, and the Ultimate Pro (fine edge, full tang). You’ll see pics of all three in here, but they are different knives with significant updates with the Pro version including full tang construction and a reinforced (pinned and welded) pommel, plus differences in styling and sheath design. The original Ultimate runs approximately $35-$40 while the Pro usually costs around $75. Don’t get confused — they all look very similar.

Gerber is a renowned international knife maker, known for manufacturing some of the most durable blades on the market. The Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate was designed with the survivalist’s approval and is the highest-end model in the company’s Bear Grylls Survival Series. From pommel to blade tip, this knife is made with one thing in mind – survival. Of course, it also makes an excellent all around camp knife too.

The Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate knife is a fixed-blade design that runs 10 inches from tip to tip. It can be comfortably holstered in the included sheath, which also includes a variety of accessories made specifically to be used with this particular knife.
Gerber has a reputation for manufacturing very high quality knives, as you would imagine with the “Legendary blades” moniker, and the Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate certainly helps uphold that reputation. The knife is made from high carbon stainless steel, which offers an excellent combination of corrosion resistance and durability. While it doesn’t hold an edge for as long as some harder grades of steel, the ability to withstand rust and corrosion is an excellent addition (and the blade does hold a sharp edge far longer than inferior steel blends). The blade itself is 4.8 inches long, and features a drop point design, which makes it an excellent cutting tool.
As you would expect from a knife labeled as the “Ultimate”, the Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate design incorporates tools and features throughout the knife’s design. The blade offers an incorporated saw tooth design near the handle, and the stainless steel pommel was added to give users the ability to use the knife as a hammer. The attached lanyard features an emergency whistle, and the rubber grip was designed to reduce the chance of slipping as well as to provide comfort.
Any discussion of this particular survival knife also requires a look at the sheath, which is far more than just someplace to carry your blade. The sheath offers a host of different features incorporated into it, including its lightweight military design and mildew resistant nylon. It also incorporates a fire starter rod (ferrocerium rod), which locks into the sheath. A built-in striker notch on the blade ensures that you can make a fire wherever you are. For on-the-go sharpening, there’s a built-in diamond sharpener in the sheath as well. Lastly, the sheath also includes land to air rescue instructions for true emergencies in the wilderness.

It’s difficult to imagine a situation where the Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate knife wouldn’t come in handy. With the drop point design, it’s an excellent cutting tool for almost any purpose. The size means that it’s an ideal addition for a range of situations, from camping and hiking to yachting, fishing and more. With the saw tooth feature on the underside of the blade, cutting small limbs and trees is possible, and the included accessories in the sheath mean that you have a real chance of surviving an actual emergency situation in which you’re stranded outside the reach of help.

Here’s what people are saying about the Bear Grylls Ultimate PRO
I went on a four day long hiking/camping trip with a few friends in UP Michigan. I bought this knife specifically for this trip, knowing i was going to abuse the heck out of it (that’s why i popped for the pro and not the original bear grylls knife) I split logs, smashed stones, carved a spear, mounted the knife on my walking stick with paracord to make another spear (then threw it), used this knife as a throwing knife, oh…and i cut down two trees with it then cleaned those into nice logs.
The sheath for this model is IMHO better than the other survival knife that is in the BG line. For one the firesteel snaps into the sheath upright which is a plus right there for me. The sheath also comes with a field sharpener built into it. Another plus.
I know that there are “higher ranked” knives, with “better” steel, if I was willing to pay 120-600 dollars a piece for them. I was not willing to do that, as I consider my potential risk level to be in a life threatening situation relatively low. With that being said, I would rather have something and not need it, than need something, and not have it.
